Sex Ed Curriculum

CHSD 218 has revised its existing sex education curriculum to be in alignment with the Illinois Learning Standards for Comprehensive Sex Education. Research supports that comprehensive personal health and sexual education promotes self-confidence and prevents health problems, unintended pregnancy in adolescents, and unhealthy relationships (www.isbe.net/sexualhealth). The CHSD 218 sex education curriculum aligns with the state and national standards and incorporates developmentally appropriate instruction related to: anatomy and physiology, puberty and adolescent sexual development, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation and identity, and sexual health. Although consent and healthy relationships as well as interpersonal violence fall under the Illinois Learning Standards for Comprehensive Sex Education, these topics are covered in our mental, emotional, and social health unit. More information regarding the importance of comprehensive sex education can be found at www.isbe.net/sexualhealth.

In accordance with SB 818, no student shall be required to take or participate in the comprehensive sex education unit. A student’s parent or guardian may optionally request their student be pulled out of the comprehensive sex education unit by submitting the request in writing.

Students who opt-out of the sex education unit will be enrolled in study hall for the duration of the unit. Students will be assigned a personal health project aligned to the ISBE and National Health Standards to complete during this unit while they are in study hall. Students will receive a grade equivalent to the weight of the sex ed unit for this project. Students who fail to complete this project will receive a “0” for their unit grade.
