Waiver Policy

PHYSICAL EDUCATION WAIVER POLICY

Community High School District 218 students in grades 11 and 12 may request physical education waivers under the following five conditions.

1. Student is determined to be participating in interscholastic athletics. Athletes in grades 11 and 12 may waive out of Physical Education during their athletic season, during which time they will be enrolled in a study hall. Students must be placed back in Physical Education class the day after their athletic season ends or if removed from athletic team. If athletes elect to use the waiver from Physical Education they will:

• receive a grade based on the days they are in Physical Education class;
• take a final exam only on instruction and material presented when student was in class;
• receive credit and grade if the student attends class for 25 days or more. Receive credit only if the student is in attendance less than 25 days

2. The student provides written evidence from an institution of higher education that a specific course is required for admission. School district staff must verify that the student’s present and proposed schedule will not permit completion of the needed course.

3. The student lacks sufficient course credit or one or more courses required by state statute or local school board policies for graduation. Students who have failed required courses, transferred into the district with deficient credits or who lack credits due to other causes will be eligible to apply for this exemption.

The School District may also excuse students in grades 9 through 12 for the following reasons:

4. The student is enrolled in a marching band program for credit and the student requests to be excused for ongoing participation in such marching band program. If a marching band members elect to use the waiver form they will:

• receive a grade based on the days they are in Physical Education class;
• take a final exam only on instruction and material presented when student was in class;
• receive credit and grade if the student attends class for 25 days or more. Receive credit only if the student is in attendance less than 25 days

5. The student is enrolled in a Reserve Officer’s Training Corp (ROTC) program sponsored by the School District.

Each request for exemption from Physical Education instruction is to be verified and eligibility determined on a case-by case basis by school district staff. Students enrolling in specialty Physical Education classes where learning is sequential and safety is of high importance will not be waived, such classes are Outdoor Education, Dance I & Dance II, SCUBA, Junior and Senior Leadership. Every student excused from Physical Education course requirements will be provided with a schedule which meets minimum school day requirements. Approval of exemptions will be for one semester only, but may be renewed for additional semester if circumstances warrant.
