In the first year of language study, the emphasis is on understanding, speaking, reading and writing the language. Practice in both conversation and writing develops simple vocabulary useful in daily situations as well as an understanding of the basic structure of the language. Through experiences and activities in the classroom, the student acquires an understanding of the people and their way of life.

In the second year of language study, there is continued emphasis on understanding, speaking, reading and writing. Mastery of present, past and immediate future tenses is stressed. Continued practice in both conversation and writing develops expanded vocabulary useful in daily situations as well as an understanding of the basic structure of the language. Through experiences and activities in the classroom, the student continues to acquire an understanding of the target language culture.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of second year course

In the third year of language study, understanding, speaking, reading, and writing are continued at an advanced level. The study of grammar is further developed to include communicative mastery of multiple tenses. Both conversational ability and reading and writing skills are emphasized. The students also become acquainted with significant cultural aspects through literature, history, and the study of contemporary life.
 
AP FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of fourth year honors course or teacher recommendation 

The fifth year of language study focuses on advanced placement language skill acquisition. Students will concentrate on the development of proficiency in listening comprehension, oral communication, advanced grammar, written expression, and literary analysis in preparation for the AP Language Exam. History and contemporary culture, as they relate to the target language, continue to be stressed. Successfully passing the Advanced Placement exam may result in earned college credit for the individual student.
 
FRENCH III HONORS DUAL CREDIT**
AP FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE DUAL CREDIT**
Credits: 1/Full Year Course
Level: 11-12 (10 with approval from teacher and Loyola University)
Prerequisites: Cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, successful completion of French 2 or French 3 or teacher recommendation

Students completing these courses simultaneously enroll in Loyola University’s dual credit program and can earn
3 university credits per successfully completed course. Loyola requires all students to have a 3.0 GPA (unweighted)
and be a junior or senior in order to earn university credit. Sophomores may enroll with teacher and university
approval. Loyola charges a $195 tuition fee, payable to the university. Financial assistance is offered to students
demonstrating need. Like regular-level Spanish, French or German level III, this course will help students continue to advance their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, though at a faster pace and at a more sophisticated level.
