In order to have a meaningful impact on student engagement and academic success, educational technology must be properly integrated in the curriculum and classroom learning activities. The SAMR model and the TPACK framework are two of the guiding principles for technology integration in District 218.
- The SAMR model includes four levels of technology integration (substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition). The level of technology integration used in a classroom depends on the specific task. The goal is for teachers to become adept at all levels of SAMR and choose the level of technology integration that is appropriate for each lesson. This is a process that requires time, professional development, and ongoing support as teachers become comfortable with utilizing technology in more sophisticated ways.
- The TPACK framework refers to the relationship among technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge. Effective lessons include all three dimensions of TPACK in the planning process. This ensures that lessons are based on rigorous content knowledge, effective instructional and assessment strategies, and appropriate technology resources. The goal is to consistently engage students in learning experiences that use technology to support content and pedagogy instead of focusing solely on the technology.
