Community High School District 218 regular Board of Education meeting today is Monday November 15th 2021 and we were at the admin Center in Oak Lawn I need a walk call Sarah president strong my friend in a cab and tell him I can take selfies present dr. Burns night States of America to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible thank you do we have any announcement from the superintendent had a student here at the central office in the adult transition program upstairs Carlos daddy passed away on October 29th after months and months actually of illness and finding out of the hospital and we would simply like to have a moment of silence if we could for Carlos today okay this is down to agenda item number for Resolutions and Commendation mr. mcpartland please sir is the policy of the Board of Education to present resolutions of commendation to staff students and community members who have distinguished themselves professionally or the others Tonight We Begin by recognizing our own board of education each year the Illinois Association of school boards sponsors school board members day to recognize the invaluable service that an issue that day is November 15th school board members south of south of volunteer their time and energy for the benefit of students parents staff members in their communities we don't say it often enough so tonight we say thank you to all of our board members for all the tickets also give me the school board members day it's a great time to recognize some reason achievements by our board members to earn the distinction of Master board member from the iasb Mr Kristen recently completed the requisite coursework the distinction of Master board member level 205 maintained his distinction as a master board my tsp congratulations unless we're going to recognize that to Justin and toes tiny houses Odyssey Ricardo regimen once again produced a competitive season full of trophies for their field show breathe into Life by Providence say sandwich in Plainfield South High School as well as North Central College in the wards for best effect best music best of the best visuals. He's working you become the new Ben's at Saint Xavier University tonight or Aaron cabasso and Noah simple left finally tonight we have to recognize Shepherd students and I K Layla Todd and Ariana Esquivel Last Summer the students developed an idea to plan and plan to community garden they recognize that some areas in our community lack access to Affordable healthy food play fruits and vegetables at Christ United Methodist Church in Alsip with their idea about building boxes for 6 garden bed placing old cardboard under the beds to separate the planting soil from the ground and laying mulch around the bed the garden yielded much fresh produce to local residents and Spire plans to expand their operation in the future Board of Education would like to honor these students for their Wonderful Life thank you sir we want to congratulate the Board of Education obviously to everyone that received an award this evening I need a motion to accept the resolutions as read please yes sir brother. student at Eisenhower like most parents how did school go today daughter imagine imagine if the students knew all this October 1st at school go oh there's a possession of the weapons that I'm a sober 7 High School golf one of three students who punched another student knocked unconscious more my back soon October 13th I was school so that's another weapon names October 14th what happened today to add battery to a faculty member student find security guard multiple times in hallway October 22nd another possession of a weapon really what was that a pocket knife getting out of hand and all the incidents are Richard the Oakland Police can call the cafeteria with major B something needs to be done I don't know if it's our kids generation is not respecting Authority I think a lot of it has to do with the discipline and how are and I didn't mean to Jocelyn discipline I think we need to be harder on discipline I blame Springfield again for that I'm going to legislation took place and how we discipline in school just lead into a slippery slope I know the afrax the bomb threats that wasn't for our students at Richard but still there is our kids Rock Community and all goes back to I think the lack of lack of discipline lack of accountability and students e discipline is not taking place so they're more likely to engage in those active activities in the future and what I'm saying is not good for 2018 speaking in general but when I see security reports like this I got messages of you no school be on lockdown because of multiple fights in the cafeteria please give me a call as soon as being arrested Community manager we got a problem on our hands here and I'm not to lecture I see that it says something's got to be done and I think we may need is a society to look at the way we're you have a disappointing school then it all starts at home to that's a big big thing but I'm we have a problem that's that's for sure I'm as a member of the security committee I think that's the one thing we could I like to discuss it with my fellow 30 members is I think I just I'm now we we have a director security put a place and immediately at this District I mean nothing is going to stop a mass shooting or stop something but it can't hurt to come out review our policies and I do think we need to send a message to our students so that there are repercussions of the parents need to talk to their students so their kids and say hey has repercussions the last a lifetime something stupid to do while in grammar school or in high school and talk to her State Route State Legislature Sanders I'm not one for the for the new you know the tone down lighter proton disciplined something to be said about you know going to school and being afraid of your teacher or Fredo the dean of discipline now these kids there they're not scared I know they're not going to get something ridiculous out of school we can't do that everything's you don't come down and then the kids do that because all of these one of our our our biggest struggles is all of the students all we are we are at probably and it's not something to be proud of but in speaking respond to you I guess it might be that like about the 40 students we are removing from School District 218 doesn't expel which I think is a wonderful thing for you do for the most part what we do is we offer alternative placement in lieu of expulsion every one of the students that was involved in anything has been removed from the school and is placing alternative placement and Joe Fowler and I have work with the principals because it's exactly that it didn't go there you can't about protecting all the other students to the other thing I'm going to tell you is the majority of the students and I can give you exact percentages did not go through our feeder school system transferred in from other school districts and Have Nots again have not followed through our part of school system so they have pools in the community but we are these kids are coming back and it's not that the disciplinary has are lenient but I think some of them a little bit get like Cheese Louise you know we want to get them out cuz they're about protection and in an incident like this they're absolutely not returning to the schools is offering them an education in lieu of expulsion spell everybody Mister you got a crap a 40 students who aren't getting any education at all with somebody's going to take care of the newest type of taxpayer of the burden of a day or so by educating them and by putting them in places where are we Horizon Alternative School Summit they work with the kids to the best of their ability to make them productive citizen so I think the principles have done a phenomenal job of really keeping the school safe and making them Angel Fowler myself making sure the students have that have something but they certainly don't go back to the home schools I just cuz that's a really it's been a very very stressful on the principal and because there is the balance of safety of all and the students so I just have to kind of defend them a little bit cuz I think they they are doing a good job I don't think I just re-read that that overall and I wasn't so much focused on the major in our schools that are being handled differently if you know people does a proportionality of the discipline being given out and I don't care if it's breaking school rules that there's repercussions because you know what I think it's time to focus more on that 90 a sound that are you know no problems and they should have a safe place to come to school or not worried about the 2% whatever percent low for Sunday today cuz it's causing the problem and I'm I meant it so terrible for the kids at night was nothing against the principle that is something needs to be done something needs to change the more problems no check double-check the residency I'm just flurries Wednesday about like proactive so we can do a kind of reteach reteach behavior in school even though you know the research tells you that the kids know right from wrong they know what what is a kind of communicating in a different Manner and repetitive communicating but I think they see a lot of the students see that there's major consequences if you do could you do some of these Waters. call preventive measures essentially put in place and brainstorm so we can know we are trying to be proactive as much as possible and to prevent anything from happening in our schools they do to it it's a matter of if we're not alone you know it's in its National thing when you start talking when they just put earrings go and meet with the other Dean's of the dean conferences it's unfortunate situation in our society but I hear you it we got it I keep the school safe and I think they know that and I think they're doing a good job I went to the second football game with my son I hope to the game out of 5 minutes before the game ended music get a ride home with a friend a friend you called me saying that I can't even get to the other side or the kids is at the record game and I'm driving meet up there you can't get through who knows what's going to happen but our President should have made sure we had more security at a football games and I thought I could been saying we don't adjust all these incidents Saturn I'm not knocking anyone here and then the school district I think and maybe step back in the end and see what we're doing what we could do different and think I'm not saying you're not doing that but when I see these reports I'm on the security committee almost my entire time on the board and things are getting worse and I just think cuz I don't respect in discipline as much anymore unfortunately Ortho or texted saying so a Sunday one end up in a prison system but we also I can't go into detail about this but we did at our last working committee meeting every discussion we did discuss a security director for this it's in the works. thank know what time you came and I think you came in late and we've already been to pass that agenda item I think she does have time to okay okay sorry or we can talk to her after the board meeting talk to you after superintendent also okay we have to run the meetings on the time limit or to ask that agenda item I'm not trying to be rude to you but rules that we have to follow our legal counsel would also okay we'll make sure words by board members are there any committee reports are going forward with our golf outing and we have pushed our trivia night to Encompass a October date so you pushed back from February last time we had it to October and October trivia night so go to meeting today we talked about if I left anything out the report thank you are there any other reports okay I do have one that's coming up is the association of school boards delegate assembly will be meeting this Saturday November in Chicago and I will attend that what we do is we vote on the resolutions that off have been submitted to the Illinois Association of school boards just approved that is what the legislative legislative body lobbies for legislators for agendas pull up the pass laws of the resolutions that have been passed so if there's any questions that you question or you want me 2 take a different opinion of it I guess before I go to the meeting we can just forward it to me or email call me or whatever thank you are you just down to 10 and a 2021 text lovey this is an action item I need a motion to bring it to the floor please 2nd April 1st and 2nd is there a scussion on this we breathe every year that our policy is same as last year but the increase every year we do this live in the same exact way without trying to reduce the lighting same thing every year I'm not going to sit here and hear my reasoning why I'm against it but this year it looking into next year I know work at 5 CPA Lancaster only or 2021 so we can send you the same practice of going to the Max and then had an adjusted back to Sleepy Eye look at a huge tax the following year this year is not going to be that bad.
