Community High School District 218 this Thursday February 18th mm and we are at the District Administrative Center on 701 Park Avenue Oak Lawn Illinois and state of office limited to 25 people in the room at a time this meeting will also be held virtually to the current covid-19 price me at 10 virtually through Zoom link February 18th 2021 Zoom regular board meeting of Education meeting any public comments can be submitted in writing to Karen Hill turn Hill I'm sorry Karen. Bill and Mary High School District 218. Or get up until agenda items call the comments from the public related to meeting agenda items thank you for your cooperation in this manner and mrs. Hill recording secretary for this evening mrs. Tom Phelan Crest about using our administrative Center as a vaccination Center I agreed it was a sight worth pursuing and contacted you mr. president who also agreed our Collective thought was the more we have to prevent to the county and a FEMA more likely we'll get a location in Oak Lawn so as of last week the villains had four options they were proposing that the Quan that is Oak Lawn High School lawn Pavilion which is part of the Oaklawn Park District District 218 administrative Center and the automotive the Automotion Warehouse which the bells vocal now owns Which is behind HomeGoods T.J.Maxx home is this time I'm happy to report that because of our Collective efforts and multiple options The Village heard back from the county who toured Automotion the Automotion warehouse this week indicated that they really like that as a site I trust you fail and told me that he will update me and I will share those updates with the board and superintendent when I got them so it looks very positive that we're going to have a vaccination site here in in the Village of Oak Lawn and it looks highly likely it'll be at the Automotion Warehouse with the gun The Village Owens and is behind home dead and the TJ Maxx at 111th Holly Hunter 11th and Cicero so that's my timing for tonight I thought that was very good news on collaboration with the district and the village to get a vaccination Center close to home here in our district thank you for your comments or I'll pay you back on that also cuz I was asked about the vaccination Center and I did speak to the superintendent by text you to one of the other but 218 is very open to that idea also if we are accepted and we have the availability to administer that type of a vaccination within the school district so I do thank God what's the Phelan for his Imports and suggesting a thought it was a good idea and mistress Toca salsa board member to be a part of it so I put an end pictures of 218 I guess anybody could, I don't know exactly what the rules will be but also for the students of Community High School District district office mr. Collier by Collier ridiculous bogus stroke SI is osteitis What's the calories count to agenda item number 88 is reports to the superintendent 8A is the financial report any questions about financial report discussion hearing none rings of Style 2 8B is technical technology excuse me update are there any questions about the technology update we have all security cameras guess Factory I'm sorry Rodger warrior in a lot of Thumbs Up I need that they're still working out the we have the first base and then the second phase I I think school shut down before we ever use the first pays so yeah they're working out some Kinks but yeah I think there's been quite the installation here so we're just waiting for some people or people to come plus we can use our security cameras even attempt something like that. we've been very lucky over the years okay does anybody else have any questions I can't toggle back and forth between the the specific I'm just curious as far as a remote thing was issues I know like we were providing hopefully some hot spots for families and things like that so are we seeing less issues with that you know we've had a few more people need to come back in person and how is that going as far as you know connectivity for the kids that are so remote if you want to I should have let you speak about the cameras as well do but go ahead and chime in if you could please we are providing hotspots to students that are having any kind of activity issues at home reports of guy is that they've been working well for the students I have not heard any any issues that I've been having with hotspot so it's it's basically handed each building if a family is having any kind of activity issues at home they reach out the building Administration there's a apostrophes billing set up where they issue the the family hotspot so that the soon can connect resuming and whatever else through the iPad in home for the people who are requesting them freeway hey guys Kim quit questioning Wi-Fi that we updated on the outside of the buildings in anybody Texas Tech or do they have to have a passcode for 2:18 currently its 2:18 staff and students we've had some requests about whether we can make it public and so it's a possibility part of the issue we had in the past because of add concerns of our bandwidth but we're just about to finish up bandwidth upgrades at all the building so it's an option that we could look at making a public Wi-Fi in the in the future thank you that's a good question. earlier okay no one no other questions on the light Linksys down to eight Sia student enrollment report any questions about the enrollment when I was if you're not a difference are far away from last year's total but it's still weird students for participating in the morning scraping therapy and the technology was in school district Frost able to do that 8D Briggs & Stratton ATS general maintenance report nice job on the snow oh I see on TV today is about flat roof leaks cavins I guess there was a horse stable in Pinellas Park today that the roof caved in but do we have leaks in our roofs or is it seems to be pretty good or the water store I'm sure that the what happens is that the water seeps down at the draining that it starts tripping to the building's obviously. the war to be right to be buried at Sports and fire at times the damage from us thank you any other questions okay brings it down to a T is foia request are there any questions on the foils I think that's what they're person was asking something about oh yeah but are you there okay sorry just out to 8 business managers update any questions he is report of the evaluation of Institute Day January 8th 2021 questions 8h is report of the first semester grade distribution any questions I just started a diet articulation and Equity update any questions, I would like to mention that is the board is aware I'm doing the equity or it has been a pretty lengthy process and dr. Johnson has worked tirelessly to bring this home in with our Consulting Group as well as Beyond Who is the head of the Consulting Group the DeYoung Alton group or something like that lyrics the name some actually 2 weeks and they will give presentation first and then follow up with the given us the actual report and go there their they're pleased with the word the the feedback they've gotten from the various Community groups School groups are 218 I think they've got a lot of recommendations for us she did tell me she thought that many great majority of them could be handled internally and so they were going but it's just been a lot of work at grabbing a lot of different groups of students community members teachers administrators board members and so were very intrigued by what we're going to learn and we're going to we know we're going to learn that there's some things we need to get better at and so that's why when it's the first place because we want to get better equity and social justice in our school district so that's more to come and that's just a sneak preview that that is on the horizon I don't remember to ask the last couple of meetings where that was at just talked to her today just completed once again two weeks Lee March 5th a meeting with her and then we'll follow up of course with a board but I asked you think that it would make sense down the road either next weather in April that they make some kind of a presentation to the board at a board meeting or you know just so the questions after this report comes out I don't think that they would do that there contract with us basically is is meeting with me to meet with myself and Jackie and then then we would present a 30-foot together hopefully we'll be able to communicate that we may be able to reach out but you know what I told her when I met with B I like talk to her I said well we don't even know what the report is what it's going to look like but very difficult to decide what we want to do with it how we need to communicate it to you if it's personal level seven we don't understand that we have trouble because then we can't fix anything right but what if we really think we need to bring them and then we'll start we reach out and choir and ask that question whether it be appropriate for them to come in and she didn't but she indicated that she didn't but that would be necessary at some somebody will be doing more of like a formal presentation and I jumped in there on the audit basically we have two parts to the report the one that be young and in Associates are going to be presenting to us in a couple weeks but then there's also an internal report that I put together to compare in tandem what we need to look at in terms of how we can move set goals with our Equity movement this is Mister still kucera I'm just flabbergasted that I'm weekly paid this this company I think it was $30,000 and they won't come and speak to the board of education on their on their report I'm flabbergasted that they can't they can't spend 20 30 40 minutes to do that I know it's not in their contract again and a good business practice or no going to do that after they may let me clarify mean to us in anyway unbelievably accommodating and friendly so I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression there I just asked her about the process and she explain what the process is and trying to explain it it's kind of complicated they want to discuss first rather than just give us 50 pages to look in a car all interpretations and stuff like that so again will certainly reach out will discuss this with their and if we think that we really need them they will reach out and ask them to do it we're hopeful that we're going to look at it we've got a director of equity we're the ones are going to have to interpret it for we're the ones that are going to have to implement the changes so we're confident that we'll be able to do so but if we think we really need them to come in then we'll ask him to do a 2 to tighten indicated that's not the way it goes it doesn't really say well in a 10-minute presentation and Public Presentation because it's very complex and we're large District multiple schools multiple opinions and viewpoints onion on which campus you're from what you know about this city or Mitchell Group your perspective is so that's basically what she was trying to say that it's not something that you really just give a 10 minute overview on because of the give a lot of people a misimpression thanks. I apologize if I made that sound like they were really not wanting to participate she will participate if we asked her thank you and I did read your report and then Dave and Ava I I have to say that 2:18 is gone above and beyond I don't know how many other school districts to that or maybe we're not as they're not as diverse as we are but to reach out to the theater District's and tried to put the curriculum in line with ours and had that conversation with them I think is quite a bit. No doubt about it at all so so I could also thank you so much sir be back on our president and agree with that I think it's so I don't know if other districts that are doing it at least to the degree that we were reaching out and we have so many communities that weird we serve and so I think it's a wonderful thing and we've come a long way in the six years that I've known the word and so thank you for your hard work there a long wait time I remember the days when I wanted to publish in the newspaper though on the bed score again from the Theater District on the board of the time in Taipei where I was I was here where they change the law or anybody had to take the test and we already said that and then we group as a district and try to solve the problem of raising test scores in tutoring programs and articulation I think it's all been very positive now the community knows this better than I ever did before Monster High that didn't make me laugh all right let's go to AJ is update on remote flashing person schooling this is discussion you can certainly jump in its goodness area but we just spent all remote we've got all remote in the last few weeks simply because of the weather that's been battering us here so we continue with the hybrid model our teachers are doing as well as they can do given this this world where they've got some students in the classroom with that other kids zooming in at home the attendance is still low in the sense of the word where it's still 50% but I think we were in the upper twenties maybe about 30% I give or take in the various buildings of kids that are attending right now we are beginning to discuss the possibility of allowing some of our students that come 4 days a week to come Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday we're looking at what that would mean a little complicated because we can't we want to make it we would have an open door policy for those kids that are all remote right now too so if they all came all of a sudden then we couldn't follow the CDC guidelines and make sure we've got the social distance but it's very likely that a lot of kids are going to stay home rest of the year and then we certainly understand that prospective from their various you know the family perspective for safety and other reasons if people are medically compromised and households and stuff like that so exploring it right now if we were to do this we would love to do it we hold we can do it it's it's probably a few weeks away and maybe maybe it's the type of thing we would look at right after spring break for the final quarter that we're not in quarters anymore think I would be good for everybody get a little more kids in the building the weather is changing it appears the positivity rates are going down people getting vaccinated so we're hoping we're headed toward another world the other thing the other difficulty were having as a sport start it up and saw you got kids coming every other day those kids need to get out of those kids at her home and their home day need to get on a bus you know later in the afternoon and get up here to school so we're exploring that we haven't made any decisions on that there are me every Friday with the conference superintendents and the superintendent district 230 and Riverside Brookfield and several of us are contemplating the same thing everybody's kind of different on the water taking a let's see how it go but yeah that would be a wonderful goal for us to have we can get more kids in the building and especially these kids that want to come forward he's a week in the parents really want them here see if we can accommodate them so Jasper Su I don't know if you throw anything in else on that has worked tirelessly to get the van with increased can I find that I know we're increasing from 5 to 6 gigs 325 now so that was a concern in or a good place there and I see over all our teachers are feeling much more comfortable with the zoom culture and seems to be getting that so like I said just kids back when you say that ain't my question is if you're not going to limit who is who was coming for days a week at most of the kids who are two days want to come in for days are like what kind of a wood that created as far as Cassidy I guess my question that's why it works word it right now Carol the devil's in the details right so what if more kids want to come then we can handle what what's our priority list going to be who gets to come first who doesn't it may come a time where we say we do this we may have to make people you know just families decide so you know what there's eight weeks ago and I and we need to know will you want to stay the rest of the cement and rest of the year and remote or are you going to want to come in and some kind of see if the number workable for a soap that's exactly what we're working on right now the details how would we do this what if too many want to come is it okay if there's an overflow classroom and one or two kids need to go zoom in a larger section just so we can follow the guy signs you know we got 15 kids in the class we got 17 the want to come that's where the stuff so there's not a lot of greeting answers here but but we also think it might be workable so we don't look at it what if we can what if we could every A&B kid right now and bring them in four days a week and make it work that be pretty exciting too. Can you still are dying to try to maintain the 60 you're not giving us 60 who are doing you know who are doing more in-person are going the 16th to get kids in school and so that it's kind of trade-off which is kind of you know a little bit scary for people so Highway 17 specifically for us to get out so we're not comfortable and for safety reasons and liability reasons you know ignoring the 6ft Rule and I know Elementary Luther Nissan that I believe but right now we're going to stick to the 6-speed until we feel comfortable with stuff coming from the government deaths in bold would you come in so that you can look at numbers and intend to get a gauge of what your numbers would look like is that what you're absolutely but yes we would have to go very official there and get high best numbers because it's a major shift and we've got to be able to pull it off we're we're guys that was thinking about thinking about next year and what next year is going to look like even though it's so hard to gauge what because we don't know what the guidelines are going to be when we don't know what to say is going to say we don't know if they're going to say you have to swap the remote and all these things like where are you at work trying trying to plan for next school year but that's what you want a subcommittee right now and start I can buy with that transition could look like and what the world's going to look like in schools and Jonathan official yacht some schools are leaning toward we're only going to offer either you come in or you stay home and do I like doing great the hybrid I've heard so many different you know things out there that you know just trying to make it if you ain't for four people to send their kids versus do the remote so I just you know I'm just kind of wondering where we're at a service center said that we really do need to think school which makes it possible we should we should be prepared that there may be a man dates have a remote option next year as well and they're right aways I said that we could approach that so we were not very far they're trying to survive map of snow and everything else going on here but I'll give you one thing for me this year you know what I mean the principles of the situation and so right now where I got three proposals today in fact we're looking at Messi graduation it may not be on the date that's on the calendar because we can't bring everybody together and graduate them all in it in an hour and a half like we used to so we're looking at a couple of different options like multiple baby moving into the Saturday prior to the Thursday that schedule so they could do kind of a nine-to-five thing maybe we do have a little bit of practice because last year we did this at the end of the year and anybody attended they were a little different pretty cool actually get all their little bit more personalized and stuff like that so we're looking at that right now actually we need to start preparing for next year but also what are we doing this or what are you doing about graduation is at what a what about a prom you know they're not allowed again and then that sort of stuff so yeah I want lots of money answer question quite honestly but can we go back to the attendance I heard you say something about pendants the rate is it the same as it was before is it getting better is it the same or is it getting worse number of kids that are attending the hosen to return okay that's been hovering around the 30% Mark another word we could take a lot more kids so you know 20% of those kids but have chosen to go remote so there are certainly some attendance issues and I don't know hey buddy can speak as many kids as we're prepared to accommodate and the capacity that we could have we're just not they're not all accusing remote right now set answer the question I guess that's the question I guess I wasn't clear so I guess the question is with the students that have chosen remote and the students what is their attendants are they logging an on-time going to class things like that I know that that that's kind of what I'm looking at so I don't know I don't know I can respond to that I know what Eisenhower specifically we we it's been challenging for students this whole year we've had struggles with students of not logging in remotely all the students were basically coming in for the during High remodel are coming in but we've been working in terms of making home visits working but our parents we have students that were bringing it to our MPS process so we're really targeting has it improved slightly but I can't say that in comparison to where we are in person it's the same level of attendance at the it's not so we have more work to do for sure thank you Husband and what I was looking for and I just want speaking of dad just as far as the remote kids do you get are we using any kind of a program where we can kind of matter what they're doing is they're having difficulty maybe navigating the works and where they should be in doing some of their work and getting to you know a website or just something that shaped like a in my district were using a program called goguardian where the students are if they're having to how do you login your getting somewhere and the teacher can that you can they can't really do things for them but they can at least open they can open a tab get them to the website they need to beat you to get so they can close a tab they can if they're only doing something inappropriate they can walk there screen things like that are we using any technology like that for these kids especially maybe for some of the kids that are more special education or you know kids that struggle a little bit more we have to remember our special education students the most at-risk programs have been coming in for days a week for Chrysler very successfully well and we're bringing in our Stewart wrist students under the mtss framework with Title 1 money since what we're doing is instead of a program computer program we have live bodies that are case managing the student at risk students I'm just wondering if for some kids that are at home that are struggling is maybe we need something like that and place where the instructor who's trying to teach remotely could kind of help them get to where they need to be I just not only academically but I need to ask needs as well kids are struggle the Wednesday's is more that one-on-one with teacher opportunity or like office hours so that's been a help and I know it's him also has tech support and place for kids to contact if they have any issues I hear what you're saying talking about something a little bit different than he is on here but not on right here but I will look into it forces route through special-ed that goguardian is that what she said there's other programs out there like it it's just I'm just saying like four really struggling to like places and in and I think sometimes just the kids knowing that you're kind of watching Justin and it's more of an appositive help you I can get you where you need just but just knowing that you're kind of watching and seeing what they're doing has his kind of helped some kids be a little more accountable it's really helped us and again how you work with younger students we use it all the way up to her Junior High and and it's be pretty helpful as well and will look into it at least through the Special Ed and kind of be at risk when the men we were handling the house is still through his own because have the student screen share the teacher roll the kids scream but they can the kitchen and show their screen the teacher can walk through what to do with a platform for Apple classroom that works at iPads set reminder but it depends on Bluetooth and so needs a proximity so when the kids are at home that solution does not work one of these days we have it that both pretty restrictive for privacy reasons on what's allowed on the iPad so we have limited options for like looking at a kid's iPad when they're not in school discovered is that you can do a video conference call with that it's more of a one-on-one versus them being you no end zone with you me know with everybody until you it's a video conference call Just Between the instructor in the students you know found ways can you like that so it might not be for everybody but it might be something helpful for certain groups of kids that are struggling especially remotely note this time that each district has the wrong tiny and the state does not have a uniform message coming down at work policy and the mandates that they put on it four times this is a different world for us two adjusting also and it is a very difficult time but I think our district do we have above and beyond and we're doing a good job so totally for next year vaccination or still remote okay Terri Nunn what is the style to 8K is committee reports by board members are there any committee reports at this time hi mr. president this is a board member still cuz I don't get too many reports today but I ask my fellow members on the security committee if we could schedule a meeting in the next month or two I know recent a while back we have on an interim director of security and we haven't really explored the director of security issue in a while so I'd like to set up a meeting with the security committee to see if I'm or where we want to go in that in that direction because I believed at the time we hadn't we that was only a temporary basis and the board was pretty much in agreement that we were wanting to look and explore whether we should have a permanent director of security so that that's been lingering out there for a long time and now my the time to start looking at that so in case if we do decide to go that route with a permanent director of security we can have one in place for the start of the Academic Year at the end of August so I'll probably be sending an email to my Shiloh security committee members if that's okay with committing is that okay if I lost Security numbers I think that's on this park sac and Miss Collier if I'm not mistaken that's fine with me as well Bob okay thank you that's all I have we have we haven't met in a while so I thought it might be a good time to meet this month or next thank you you going to meet a last-minute spartak in the sky like I'm open to either but I guess it's just three of us we probably could do do do is zoom and that that wouldn't that legal is not here in mistress, I don't believe Feeney throws a apparent that reached out to me about about her students graduated and that person gets a pediatric care of and the parents wanted to thank you distract you say how wonderful a woman in a bikini wash I wanted to relay that impact that to her how quick she responded to me and make sure it was taken care of with regard to the sheets dr. Cheney was on top of it right away and this job parents of the students graduated was very happy with our district and hub dr.
