Dear CHSD 218 Community –

I hope this letter finds you healthy and safe. As you know, Remote Learning will continue until the end of the school year. As I mentioned in my last letter, our high schools are making end of year decisions on a variety of topics and have been communicating those decisions to their families as they become finalized. We have appreciated your patience and understanding as we have worked through all of these issues. It has been heartwarming to see how everyone – staff, students, and 218 families – have pulled together during this crisis. We are stronger together, so I wanted to say thank you for all of the cooperation we have received.

Our high schools may have communicated some of this information already, but I think a couple items bear repeating. We hope to have graduations in July, but of course those plans are tentative based upon guidance from the governor’s office and state and federal health officials. I can also announce that CHSD 218 summer school will be held virtually, via remote learning. You can click this link for more information: CHSD 218 Summer School.

In addition, grading guidelines have been adjusted to further align with state guidance to ensure that work done during remote learning maintains or improves current grades. The state of Illinois has been very clear that no student’s grades should be harmed by this pandemic. Our guidelines take into account the numerous variables that students and parents (and teachers) have had to confront attempting to access remote learning. While I am so proud of the efforts by our staff and our students these last six weeks, the suddenness of our shutdown in mid-March created inevitable inconsistencies in student access to learning and student performance. Please note also that final exams for the second semester have been eliminated.

The last six weeks have been crazy (and challenging) for all us – not only in our schools but also in your personal and professional lives. The good news, at least regarding schooling, is that the end is in sight. Students have three weeks of school left. I am urging our students (with maybe a little push from mom and dad!) to stay focused and continue to be engaged in your classes. Any grading guidelines that stipulate that grades cannot go down have the potential to diminish student motivation for learning. I suppose that is human nature. But the purpose of school is not to get a grade. The purpose of school is to learn. I encourage our students to take advantage of their final learning opportunities over these last few weeks. We have made it this far. Let’s cross the finish line fully engaged and with our arms raised in victory!

In closing, I want to reiterate how proud I am of the CHSD 218 community. I am proud of your cooperation, your patience, and your understanding. I am proud of your perseverance. This, too, shall pass. Eventually we will return to normal. For now, however, I am asking you to stay focused on that light at the end of the tunnel. We will be through it in just a few weeks. And then we all can exhale!

Estimada Comunidad de CHSD 218 –

Espero que esta carta lo encuentre saludable y seguro. Como saben, el aprendizaje remoto continuara hasta el final del año escolar. Como mencione en mi última carta, nuestras escuelas secundarias están tomando decisiones de fin de año sobre una variedad de temas y han estado comunicando esas decisiones a sus familias a medida que finalicen. Apreciamos su paciencia y comprensión, ya que hemos trabajado en todos estos problemas. Ha sido conmovedor ver como todos, personal, estudiantes y familias del distrito 218, se han unido durante esta crisis. April 17, 2020

Dear CHSD 218 Community,

This afternoon Governor Pritzker canceled in-person classes at all Illinois schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

Given the current public health crisis caused by COVID-19 and the need to make sure our students and staff are safe, this decision was expected by many of us. However, that doesn’t diminish the disappointment so many us feel who were hoping that somehow someway we would be able to return to our schools before the end of the school year.

I know that this announcement raises so many questions for our students, especially our seniors. How will students pick up items left in our buildings? What will happen with graduation? Will there be summer school? Is there going to be a prom? Please know that the district has been working on contingency plans for all of these issues. More information will be coming soon from your school principals on these topics and many others over the next couple of weeks.

We will continue to enact Remote Learning Days for the rest of the school year. As both our teachers and students become more familiar with this approach, we hope that this type of learning will continue to evolve and be more meaningful. Though Remote Learning has gotten off to a relatively successful start, we do realize that there have been some bumps in the road regarding student attendance procedures, posted assignments, and other issues. We sincerely appreciate your patience as we have attempted to troubleshoot these issues over the last few weeks. Let me reiterate, although we expect students to engage in Remote Learning, we understand that these are challenging times. Your school and your teachers – along with our counselors and social workers – will offer our students whatever support and understanding and time they need during this crisis.

In closing, I would like to say thank you. Thank you to our teachers, administrators, and staff who have been moving mountains in order to put Remote Learning in place. Thank you to our students who had their world suddenly pulled out from under them and have been forced to adjust to a new world of distance learning. Thank you to our parents for your understanding and for the support you have given your children. We realize that you, too, have been impacted by all of this in so many ways. Finally, let me close with a special shout out to our Senior classes. We realize that what should have been a magical end of your high school years has been unfortunately altered by this virus. We share in your deep disappointment. Our schools will work hard to see if they can restore just a little bit of that magic in the coming weeks.

Esta tarde, el Gobernador Pritzker cancelo las clases en persona en todas las escuelas de Illinois durante el resto del año escolar 2019-2020.

Dada la actual crisis de salud pública causada por COVID 19 y la necesidad de asegurarnos que nuestros estudiantes y el personal estén seguros, muchos de nosotros esperábamos esta decisión. Sin embargo, eso no disminuye la decepción que muchos sentimos porque de alguna manera esperábamos poder regresar a nuestras escuelas antes del final del año escolar.

Sé que este anuncio plantea muchas preguntas para nuestros estudiantes, especialmente nuestros estudiantes de último año. ¿Cómo recogerán los estudiantes los artículos que quedan en nuestros edificios? ¿Qué pasara con la graduación? ¿Habrá escuela de verano? ¿Habrá un baile de graduación? Dear Students, Parents and CHSD 218 Families:

We informed you on March 30 that our schools will be transitioning to Remote Learning Days. On March 31st, Governor Pritzker announced that Illinois will continue its suspension of in-person instruction for another 30 days, through April 30. This means that CHSD 218 will be engaged in remote learning practices for the entire month of April. To help you in this transition, we have created a CHSD 218 Remote Learning Day Guidelines document.

While this is a unique and challenging time, we are confident that we can continue to engage our students in learning opportunities in the month ahead. Any successful mission will require the cooperation of all of us. The recommendations from the state continually stress that any Remote Learning program should do no harm to our students. Students will not fail any courses. However, students who do no work or do work well below any reasonable expectations will receive an incomplete grade for a particular course. That will simply mean that students will have to make up the work at a later date in order to pass a class.

We want to stress to you that we realize that there are all types of extenuating circumstances out there that may impact students' ability to complete the work assigned. We promise to work through those issues with you in the coming days ahead. Our primary concern is the health and safety of our students. Our secondary concern is our students’ education. We also realize that a return to “school”, in a more regularly structured way, is going to be good for many of our students. Students - we ask that you engage in your classes and with your teachers in the coming weeks. Please help us make this meaningful for you. Parents - if necessary - we ask that you partner with us to help ensure that your son or daughter plugs into our Remote Learning program beginning Wednesday, April 1.

If anyone - student or parent - has specific questions or issues, please direct them to your high school’s administration or to the classroom teacher. Everyone should be available via email.
